More Information
Deborah J. Caruso, Indianapolis, Eleventh District, has been a member of the firm Dale & Eke since 1980, practicing in the areas of bankruptcy, creditors' rights and business litigation. She is a Chapter 7 panel trustee and represents other trustees in Chapter 7 cases, debtors and creditors in business bankruptcy cases, and out of court workouts. She received her A.B., cum laude, from Indiana University in 1978 and her J.D., cum laude, from the I.U. Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1981.

She is a member of the Indianapolis (Distinguished Senior Fellow; to serve as counsel to the president in 2016), Indiana State (past chair, Bankruptcy & Creditors' Rights Section; past counsel to the president, Board of Governors; past chair, Compensation Committee) and the American bar associations. She is also a member of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees and the American Bankruptcy Institute.

She was born in Chicago in 1956.

Professional enjoyment: I enjoy solving complex problems with my clients, many of whom come to me to reorganize and save their family business. As a business bankruptcy lawyer, I have practiced during some remarkable times in our country's history, the most recent being the Great Recession. I have also enjoyed the professional friendships and relationships I have made with some wonderful attorneys and judges.

Your inspiration: I hate to say it, but it was the lack of jobs in 1978 when I graduated from Indiana University with a degree in forensic science. Some of you may recall that forensics wasn't as exciting as CSI, but involved a guy named Quincy, played by Jack Klugman, at a microscope. I spent a summer interning in a crime lab in the Chicago suburbs and quickly decided that forensics was not for me, and besides, there were no jobs!

Why bar association involvement: I have occupied many positions in the bar association, which has enabled me to meet and work with attorneys from all over the state. My experiences in the bar have been personally rewarding and very beneficial in networking and building a practice. I would like to continue the association's efforts in increasing its membership, particularly with the younger lawyers, so that they too can experience the many benefits of joining and becoming active in the bar association.

If not a lawyer: Broadway dancer - provided I had more talent

Fav hobbies: ballet and jazz dancing, yoga, spending time with my husband and traveling to Chicago and Seattle to see my children

Fav book or author and current reading: The following books are on my nightstand: "Eat Pray Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert; "The Bone Clocks" by David Mitchell; "You" by Caroline Kepnes; and "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler.

Fav vacation spot? Fripp Island, S.C., Italy and Beaver Creek, Colo.

Fav food or restaurant: Keeping with my Italian heritage, I have to say Italian food cooked by my mother and late grandmothers.

Top of my bucket list: sitting on the beach watching the sunset with my husband every day of the week!
